Standard Methods of Damp Testing - Protometer
Property Surveyors carry out inspections of dampness for Homeowners, Clients, Solicitors and Estate Agents using an electrical conductance damp test. This is often carried out using a 'Protometer' which determines the Wood Moisture Equivalent (WME) displayed as a percentage. It is a non-destructive surface test of the subject area. In skilled hands, the Surveyor can assess through experience what is the likely cause or contributory factors of the dampness.
Advanced Testing Methods - The Calcium Carbide Test
The Speedy Moisture Meter is a scientific apparatus used to carry out a chemical test for moisture. Using a specialised pressure sealed vessel, a sample taken from the subject area is combined with a measured weight of reagent (Calcium Carbide). The vessel is then aggitated in order to combine the subject material with the reagent. The presence of moisture within the subject material causes a chemical reaction to take place. This process causes pressure to build within the vessel which can be measured using the display gauge.
